CRANBERRY TWP., PA (Nov. 14, 2018) — The CEO of PLS Logistics presented the Fall 2018 Spisak Lecture at Pennsylvania State University on Wednesday, October 24, to educate students and faculty members about challenges and opportunities in the industrial transportation industry.
Greg Burns, President, Chairman and CEO of PLS Logistics Services, spoke to supply chain management students and faculty in the Smeal College of Business about the perils, pitfalls and best practices for industrial shippers in the current state of the industry. Burns said that the supply chain market is experiencing a period of growth and will continue to grow in years to come. Burns highlighted the four main challenges present in the industrial supply chain industry.
“Larger dry van trucking companies can invest money in newer industry technology without a problem,” Burns said. “The flatbed market is much more fragmented with smaller companies, and they don’t have the resources to invest as much in technology as the larger companies do.”
Burns said that new technology continues to make an impact on the industry, causing higher rates and less productivity due to stricter regulations. Burns recommended that companies should work to become a shipper of choice, use multiple different modes when scheduling shipments and utilize logistics professionals that understand the dynamics of industrial freight.
